Fraction formulas

Addition

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd

Subtraction

a/b − c/d = (ad − bc) / bd

Multiplication

a/b × c/d = ac / bd

Division

a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc

What is a simplified fraction?

A simplified fraction is written in its lowest terms. Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 6/8 becomes 3/4 when both parts are divided by 2.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, 7/3 is equal to 2 1/3. The calculator shows a mixed-number form when the answer is an improper fraction.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Convert both fractions to a common denominator, add the numerators, and simplify the result. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

How do I divide fractions?

Keep the first fraction, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction, then simplify. For example, 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 1/2 × 4/3 = 2/3.

Can I use negative fractions?

Yes. Enter a negative numerator or denominator. The result is normalized so the denominator is positive.

Why can't a denominator be zero?

A fraction with a zero denominator is undefined. Division by a fraction whose value is zero is also undefined.

Does the calculator show decimal answers?

Yes. It shows the exact simplified fraction and an approximate decimal and percentage. Repeating decimals are rounded for display.

This calculator is for educational and general-purpose use. Decimal and percentage values are rounded for display; the fraction result remains exact within the calculator's supported integer range.
